I was reading a blog post earlier about cover versions of ‘In Heaven’ by Peter Ivers (one of my favourite songs) which makes an appearance during the famous ‘Lady in the Radiator’ scene in David Lynch’s Eraserhead. I remember crying inexplicably the first time I saw it, and, going on the number of covers it has inspired, I cannot have been the only one it left an impression on. The Pixies, Bauhaus, Modest Mouse, Tuxedomoon, Helios, Miranda Sex Garden, Bang Gang, and Mellow Man Ace have all recorded takes or ‘interpolations’. Out of those, I knew only two – so I was looking forward to giving the rest a listen and perhaps highlighting one on here. Unfortunately, none of them do it for me. Even Helios’s effort from last year, which the writer described as “a gorgeous version”, paled in comparison and seemed quite emotionless. So after all that I thought, screw it, it’s a good opportunity to rewatch the original scene…and the same site eventually led me to a one-minute Lynch short that I hadn’t seen before, which I have also posted below.
