Dead band members, armed robbery, comas, confused sexuality, ‘poop journals’, self-loathing, child abuse, genetic disorders, nervous breakdowns and walkouts – this is the context that framed Deerhunter’s output in 2007. The music may have been good enough to stand on its own but, whether the listener was interested or not, it came with side stories.

Jay Reatard – Fluorescent Grey

This is a cover of my favourite Deerhunter song, which is part of an ongoing ‘covers swap’ series by Jay Reatard for the Matador label. I’m not sure about the faux-English accent here, but what he has done with the now acoustic ‘people never know’ breakdown is interesting. Deerhunter – ‘Never Stops’

I have mixed feelings about posting this track. When I was leaving the Primavera site one night last week in Barcelona, I came across Bradford Cox slumped outside his hotel. But beyond the straight-ahead thrusts of the singles, the real heart of this album lies in two Aaron Helphill-penned tunes that showcase his incredible songwriting talents…

Atlas Sound – Oliver

The blog of Bradford Cox (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound) is the perfect example of how music and one’s personal life can seamlessly co-exist. With a refreshing lack of self-censorship, Cox uses it not only as a place to engage directly with fans but also as an outlet for his prolific recording. The singer’s sleepless nights often see him uploading whole EPs of fresh material as soon as they’ve been recorded; requested cover versions, mixtapes and even songs inspired by individual fans (such as ‘Oliver’, above) all supplement the often harrowing musings they appear alongside. ‘Cryptograms’ seemed to split a lot of people right down the middle and, funnily enough, it is a record of vastly different sides (more…)
