Andrew Bird – Ethiobirds
This song is a live take recorded in a silo one evening, with just Andrew Bird, a violin, a looping pedal, tape recorder and some rythmic crickets. It must be over a year since I listened to this song (it appears on the live album Fingerlings 3), but walking home with it ringing in my ears last night at dusk, and then again this morning in the sunshine, I remembered how powerful it is. Not only do I imagine Bird alone on his farm building his own symphony, but what it must have felt like when he hit rewind and listened back to it. One mistake could have sent the whole crescendo he weaves toppling over, but it’s perfect. All of it perfect.
